>CGC FRANK DREW and TRACEN Yorktown Partner for Fire Fighting Training

The Coast Guard Cutter FRANK DREW partnered with Training Center Yorktown to complete a week of fire-fighting training at Yorktown’s state-of-the-art facility.  The training was a unique opportunity for the FRANK DREW. Although this quality and type of training is routine for larger classes of Coast Guard Cutters as it is for the commercial maritime industry, fire fighting training on smaller Cutter classes is often unfortunately limited only to classroom instruction.

Direct coordination between the Chief’s mess aboard FRANK DREW and the Training Center’s mess identified the availability of both instructors and the use of the fire fighting facility due to the reduction in Damage Control students at the Training Center.

There are few shipboard emergencies that rival a fire at sea, both in the destructive force to the vessel and, more importantly, with the potential for loss of life.  FRANK DREW sailed away from the Training Center better prepared to combat a shipboard fire as a result of the professionals at the Coast Guard’s Damage Control School in Yorktown.
