>Tragedy in Hampton Roads

>On Wednesday night, 13 October 2010, a Coast Guardsman from Maritime Safety and Security Team (MSST) New York accidentally fell into the water during tactical boat operations. The MSST was conducting training with the Coast Guard Cutter FRANK DREW near the Monitor Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

The search for the fallen service member was an all-out effort and involved multiple search and rescue entities from Coast Guard and Navy boat and air crews, a Coast Guard Dive unit, Navy EOD along with local police and fire departments. They recovered the body in approximately 50-feet of water near the bridge-tunnel around 5 p.m. on 14 October.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the young Coast Guardsman who lost his life.

MSST’s are tactical law enforcement units assigned to the United States Deployable Operations Group (DOG). Their mission is to provide enhanced port safety and security and law enforcement capability. There are 13 MSST’s strategically positioned throughout the United States. They train regularly to respond to terrorist threats or incidents in ports and waterways throughout the country.
