>Coast Guard Cutter Elm Departs for Gulf Oil Response

>ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. – The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Elm departed its homeport of Atlantic Beach in support of the on-going oil clean up operations in the Gulf of Mexico, Tuesday. The Elm will direct a task force of skimming assets to intercept pockets of oil that threaten Gulf coast ecosystems and critical infrastructure. Currently, several cutters along with dozens of other government and contracted oil spill skimming vessels are on scene in the Gulf. The Elm is one of a class of 16 Coast Guard cutters designed with the capability to skim spilled oil.

In the above undated stock photo, the Elm deploys its vessel of opportunity skimmer system. The VOSS can be affixed to virtually any vessel in an area affected by an oil spill and is designed to skim oil off the surface of the water.
