>Fifth District Participates in CSPI Work Study Pilot Program

>The Fifth Coast Guard District Prevention Division (dp) is participating in a College Student Pre-Commission Initiative (CSPI) Work Study Pilot Program.

The CSPI Work Study Pilot initiative provides CSPI students in Hampton Roads, VA, an inside look into the Coast Guard core missions and career paths while receiving one-on-one mentoring from top performing junior officers. The goal of the pilot is to ensure these students are fully prepared for Officer Candidate School (OCS) and are equipped with the proper tools for a successful start as Coast Guard junior officers.

During the spring 2010 college semester, dp is providing its mentee Officer Trainee (OT), Miah A. Brown, with opportunities to interview and learn from senior and junior officers with varied military backgrounds and Coast Guard experiences.
To date, OT Brown (2nd from left in above/right photo) has participated in a training exercise with Air Station Elizabeth City, NC, and conducted both domestic and foreign ship inspections with the crew of Sector Hampton Roads.

Over the next few months, OT Brown’s experiences will expand to include: standing watches in the Fifth District command center in order to learn how to conduct search patterns and manage Coast Guard assets and resources; reviewing reports of marine accident investigations for completeness and thoroughness; additional vessel and facility inspections; and will be tailored to provide her a broad understanding of the Coast Guard’s missions.

OT Brown is a senior at Hampton University and was selected for the CSPI program in the spring 2009. She is a cheerleader, currently has a 3.3 grade point average, a member of Mu Kappa Tau National Marketing Honor Society and will graduate college, spring 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing.
OT Brown successfully completed Coast Guard basic training in Cape May, NJ in the summer 2009, and after graduating from Hampton University, will attend OCS at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. After successful completion of OCS, OT Brown will be commissioned as an Ensign and will receive orders to her first duty station as an officer.
Additional information on the CSPI program or other opportunities to earn a commission in the United States Coast Guard is available online.
