>U.S. Flag Cargo Ship Evades Pirates

>The EU Maritime Security Centre reports that on Nov. 2 some 360 nautical miles east of Mombasa, Kenya, pirates attempted to hijack a U.S. flagged cargo ship, the MV Harriette.

Pirates on two small skiffs approached the vessel and opened fire with automatic weapons. Rocket Propelled grenades were also seen by the crew of the Harriette. The pirates tried to get onboard the vessel with a ladder but the master of Harriette made evasive maneuvers and succeeded in keeping the pirates off his ships. Nobody was reported injured on board.

On Apr. 27, 2009, Coast Guard Sector Baltimore conducted a inspection onboard the MV Harriette in Baltimore, M.D., and verified that the vessel was in compliance with the requirements of the Maritime Transportation Security Act and the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code.

The objectives of these requirements is to establish a framework involing co-operation between international governments, government agencies, local adminstrations and the shipping and port industries to detect/assess security threats and take preventive measures against security incidents affecting ships or port facilities, including attempted hijackings at sea.
