>Final Rule: Procedures for Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs

>In an effort to reduce the chances of beating a Department of Transportation (DOT) urinalysis test through various means, DOT made changes to 49 CFR Part 40. These changes became effective August 31, 2009 and apply to employers in the maritime industry as well.

Coast Guard marine inspectors should be familiar with the drug and alcohol testing regulations including these recent changes, and educate and ensure compliance by marine employers during vessel inspections.

The recent changes are summarized in a one page DOT flyer available here. Additional information is available on DOT’s Office of Drug and Alcohol Policy & Compliance website or from the Fifth Coast Guard District’s Drug and Alcohol Program Inspector, Mr. James Glover. Mr. Glover can be reached at (757) 398-6682.
