>Auxiliarists’ recognized for quick action.

At the Coast Guard Fifth District Southern Region Auxillary Conference held September 18th and 19th, Auxiliarist Tom Rundell and Auxiliarist Madeline Brainard were recognized and awarded the Auxiliary Medal of Operational Merit for their fast action in preventing greater damage in response to a boat fire on Claytor Lake, August 9th, 2009. Using the Auxiliary Facilities’ anchor, chain, and line they skillfully manuevered close enough to enage the burning vessel in tow. Then safely moved it away from the Hidden Valley Hollow dock facility preventing other vessels from becoming envolved. The boat’s owner suffered minor burns to his arm and said the boat erupted in flames when he attempted to start the engine. No other injuries were reported. The incident highlights the need to use blowers and ventilate engine spaces before attempting to start the engine, especially after fueling and trailering.
